چکیده

Ab&act The structural performance of medium density fiberboard (MDF) is attributable to three primary variables which are: physical and mechanical properties of individual wood fibers; fiber-to-fiber stress transfer; and fiber orientation. These origins of fiber properties and stress transfer can be traced to the fiber generation method wherein fiber orientation is associated with mat formation. This paper is part of an on-going study to determine the mechanisms governing the stiffness and strength of fiber-based composites. Preliminary data are presented in this paper focusing on the effect of juvenility and fiber generation on the mechanical properties of individual wood fibers and the subsequent properties of MDF panels. Development of panel stiffness and strength is also discussed with regards to fiber packGroom Mott

Effect of Fiber Surface and Mechanical Properties on the Stiffness and Strength of Medium- Density Fiberboard

The mechanical properties of wood-based composites are dependent upon the properties of the wood components (e.g. wood fibers, wood strands) and the manner in which they are combined. The relationship between fiber mechanical properties and fiber-based composites has been discussed in several publications, but is best described in Page et al. (1977). This paper will focus primarily on the influ...

Modeling the Tensile Behavior of Fibers with Geometrical and Structural Irregularities

Virtually all fibers exhibit some dimensional and structural irregularities. These include the conventional textile fibers, the high-performance brittle fibers and even the newly developed nano-fibers. In recent years, we have systematically examined the effect of fiber dimensional irregularities on the mechanical behavior of the irregular fibers. This paper extends our research to include the ...

Mechanical Properties of Irregular Fiber (Invited Review Paper)

Irregularities are inherent to virtually all fibers, including the conventional textile fibers, the high-performance brittle fibers and newly developed nano-fibers. These irregularities can fall into two main categories: dimensional or geometrical irregularity (external) and structural irregularity (internal). For natural fibers such as wool, diameter variation along fiber length is atypical ex...

Development of Fiber Reinforced SCM for Sustainable Construction

The sustainability of the built environment is increasingly coming to the forefront of infrastructure design and maintenance decisions. To address this, development of a new class of more sustainable cement-based materials is needed. Fiber reinforced self-consolidating mortar (FRSCM) was developed by optimizing the micromechanical parameters, which control composite properties in the hardened s...
